Tips for Students During the COVID-19

COVID-19 pandemic has brought the whole world to a standstill. From multinationals to NGOs, from the rich to poor, from the aged to new-borns; this pandemic has made everyone hit the pause button on their regular lives, and go back to living in their houses. And, students are no different.

At such a time, students are asked to leave their campus and study from the comfort of their home. While moving out from the college and studying from your home sounds simple to many, it might not always be. If you are one such student, taking a little longer to adjust to the sudden change, we are here to help you out.

Tips to Help Students During the COVID-19

We have listed down a few actionable tips that will help you get through this COVID-19 pandemic. Let’s get started.

1. Accept The Reality

Not travelling to college anymore and not worrying about practical submissions and exams might seem like a comfortable lifestyle. But, with time, staying all the time indoors amid a lockdown can impact your productivity and mental well-being negatively.

Hence, you should remember that this isn’t a vacation from school. During this time, consider practising self-compassion for what you are going through. Communicate with your family members about what’s challenging about this change. Talking at such times can help you come to terms with reality and help you cope with it better.

2. Create A Schedule

Apart from online lectures, there might not be much to do every day. But, do not let this stop you from sticking to a proper schedule. A routine will help ensure you get your nutrition and sleep on time.

While creating a schedule – along with your study time – keep a slot aside for exercise. This will lower your stress levels, help you to regulate your emotions better and improve your sleep.

Work on something that makes you happy

Considering the situation around us, it can get difficult to remain positive. So, to take a little break, you can start a project you’ve meant to work on. This can be completing a book, working on your portfolio, painting, or even journaling.

It’s completely okay to be worried. It would help if you worked on finding hope in knowing that it won’t be like this forever.

3. Stay Connected

Since social distancing has become a must, it won’t be possible to meet your friends and family. If you are staying alone or away from your loved ones, try to maintain a constant connection virtually. Some sense of connection to others is essential for our mental and physical health.

You can even be an active participant in your college groups, online book clubs and studying circle, where you can study or talk in the virtual presence of your classmates.

4. Be Mindful of Exposure to the News

At times like this, staying informed is essential, but you also need to know when you should pause all the stressful events around the world.

You should be aware of how the news is making you feel and how much of it you are consuming every day. It will be helpful to step back and take a break to study, talk to family, or read.

5. Practise Cognitive-Behavioural Skills

Did you know what you think affects the way you behave? Well, to improve your thinking process in a lockdown, opt for cognitive behavioural therapy. This is a simple exercise which aims at changing patterns of thinking, so you can change the way you feel.

If you have a negative thought like “I might get the COVID-19 virus and fall sick”, replace it with “I will stay healthy by practising good infection control practices.” By replacing negative thoughts with positive ones, you will be able to improve your mental and physical well-being.

6. Prevent Yourself from Covid-19 Virus

Even when we are in lockdown, take basic measures such as washing your hands for 20 seconds, covering your mouth when you sneeze or cough and throwing away the tissue immediately, maintaining at least six feet of space between other people.

If you are experiencing any symptoms such as high fever, cough, muscle aches and fatigue, get in touch with your doctor right away.

Conclusion

There you have it – simple yet useful tips for students during the COVID-19 pandemic. We hope our recommendations help you stay fit, both mentally and physically. Remember, we are all in this together. By following the rules and regulations issued by the government, we will be able to rise as a stronger and healthier community.
